Zachary Fisher*
Inducted 1997
Zachary Fisher grew up in Brooklyn, New York, one of seven children
of a building contractor from Russia. Zach had to quit school at 16
to work as a laborer to help with family expenses. He and his
brothers later would build some of the most prestigious office
buildings in New York. Later, he funded the campaign to turn the
battle-scarred aircraft carrier, USS Intrepid, into America’s
largest naval museum. His Fisher Houses at military base hospitals,
scholarships for children of servicemen, and centers for Alzheimer’s
research are part of his full-time philanthropy. Commenting on
accomplishments in business, Fisher explains, "Success to me is when
someone amasses a certain amount of money and then does something
for others with that money. I feel I’ve succeeded in finding places
to help."
