W.W. Clements*

W.W. “Foots” Clements started selling Dr. Pepper in 1935, when, as a
student at the University of Alabama, he began a marketing career as
a route salesman. Thirty-nine years later he was elected chairman of
the company. He was recognized as the catalyst of the company’s
significant growth through the 1960’s and 1970’s. He is credited
with opening the company’s international market by successful
franchising bottling plants in Japan. He has been director and
president of Sales and Marketing Executives International, and is
past president of the Horatio Alger Association for Distinguished
Americans. He serves on the President’s Council of the University of
Alabama and on the board of Southern Methodist University Foundation
for Business Administration.
